We had a great first day at West Side High School! We started the day with an assembly in the arena and I couldn't have asked for a more respectful group of students! Even though we've had a couple of changes for them, they were champs with positive attitudes. It's great to see so many smiles and hear the sounds of laughter in the halls and on the sidewalks. West Side High School Parents and Students:
In an effort to improve student interactions and relationships, reduce tardiness, and improve student academic focus, the cell phone policy at West Side High School has been modified. Students will still be allowed to have their cell phones at school except on a more limited basis. Students may have their phones before the 1st period bell, during lunch, and after school. Cell phones are not allowed in the locker rooms or bathrooms at any time due to privacy concerns. Phones must be turned off and in either the student's backpack or locker between 7:50 a.m. and lunch and after lunch until school is out. We ask that parents call the office during these times if you need to get a message to your child. They will be allowed to check messages on their phones during lunch each day. We want to help students develop closer relationships with each other during these very important teenage years. How exciting it was to have not one but TWO helicopters land during our Back to School Bash! Thank you, Survival Flight and Arkansas State Police, for being a part of welcoming our students back!
We want to thank our dedicated West Side School Board members for their time and sweat preparing and serving food to everyone during our Back to School Bash! We are thankful to have a group of people that are supporting our staff, students, and families in any way they can! We also want to thank Pam Linebarger and Matt Wallace for serving food on Thursday night as well.

I want to welcome all of you back to school! Tomorrow, Monday, August 15, will start a new and exciting school year for all of us. School will begin and end at the same time as last year. Students may be dropped off at 7:30 a.m. with the first bell ringing at 7:45 a.m. and 1st period beginning at 7:50 a.m. School will end at 3:10 p.m. Both drop-off and pick-up for high school students are still at the front of Gathright. Preschool students and buses only will drop off in the back by the cafeteria.
When the bell rings at 7:45 a.m., all students and staff will report to the Arena for a Welcome Assembly. Students will need to bring a water bottle again this year. We will have some available for students who do not have one. These must be closed containers with lids - no cups. Please bring your keycard/ID badge with you if you still have one. Students who need a new one will receive one this week. We are looking forward to a great year!

As part of our exciting Back to School Bash for Open House on Thursday evening, we will have both the Arkansas State Police and Survival Flight helicopters! They will be landing in the gravel parking lot at the east end of the Arena around 4:30 p.m. These helicopters will be open for students to visit between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. This area will be closed to public parking.
Want an adrenaline shot of happiness? Come hear Reggie Dabbs speak at 6 pm Thu Aug. 18 at Brady-Hipp Arena. He will color your world happy and make the case that EVERY child can succeed!

Just a reminder that senior portraits and cap and gown pictures will be taken tomorrow, Aug. 12, beginning at 9:00 AM in the old cafeteria. Boys need to wear a white t-shirt. Girls need to wear a top they can pull down over the shoulders. The photo company is charging a $20 sitting fee, but it can be paid later. If a senior cannot attend, there will be a makeup day later.
The Back to School Bash is 5-7 pm Thursday for Pre-K through Grade 12 students and families! Games, bounce house, health screenings, hot dogs and snow cones, and haircuts are ready. Plus, families get to meet teachers in the classroom!
