The West Side eSports Super Smash Bros. team opened the playoffs in style on Monday, upsetting Bryant to advance to the round of 32 in the AAA state tournament. No. 18 Bryant seemed to be the favorite going in, but ran into a buzzsaw, as the 47th-seeded Eagles dominated, 3-0 sets, 6-1 games. West Side (6-3) will next face the Morrilton-Maumelle Charter winner on Wednesday. Pictured, from left, Caleb Cross, Elijah Antonacci and Kolby Lockard.

In a win-or-go-home match, the West Side eSports Smash Bros. team survived a 3-2 dogfight over Umpire High School on Wednesday. The win will almost certainly lock up a playoff spot for the team of Kolby Lockard, Elijah Antonacci, Jordan Ragsdale and Caleb Cross.
Umpire tied the match at 2-2, but Lockard finished his opponent in straight sets to clinch the win. For the first time in program history, all three Eagle eSports teams (Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Splatoon 3) qualified for the state tournament, which begins after Thanksgiving break.
