This post is to make students, parents, and guardians aware of a newly adopted board policy that goes into effect today, October 1. The policy was adopted by the board on September 28. Due to the overwhelming amount of time that is being spent by teachers after regular school hours preparing for lessons both in person and virtually, delivering lessons both in person and virtually and assessing student performance both in person and virtually teachers will not be expected to correspond with students, parents or guardians after 3:30 each day. We understand that while district employees are concerned with the well being of our students, they also have families of their own at home that should not be neglected. Any questions you may have for teachers may still be submitted at your leisure, just be aware to not anticipate getting responses after 3:30 each day. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Standing & Chair Seating: 1 person per each clearly divided concrete section along the sides of the court spaced at least 6 feet apart at opposite sides of each division unless members of the same household family. Face Coverings: Are required for all persons except for children under the age of 10, should remain in place at all times, and only be removed briefly for consumption of food or beverage. Restrooms/ Sanitation: Maximum of two persons in restrooms at a time to allow for social distancing. Restrooms and frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected as needed during the event. Cones and/or markers will be used as needed to ensure 6ft social distancing while in lines. Concessions: No concessions will be provided. Parking/ Entrance/ Exit: All attendees must park in the softball/ baseball parking area and must enter and exit through the softball/baseball entrance only. The paved parking area in front of the courts will not be used. Cones and/or markers will be used to ensure 6 feet social distancing while in lines. Notice to Public: Signs will be posted at the entrance advising the public according to ADH requirements. Compliance of the directives must be followed by attendees and participants at all times. The district's plan was developed in accordance with the state guidelines linked below. West Side Picture Day is Wednesday, September 16th. All students, faculty and staff need to have their photos taken at this time. We will send picture order forms home with students next week. If you wish to purchase photos, please send the completed form and payment with your child on September 16th. That will also be the day for seniors to take cap and gown pictures and formal portraits. Senior girls need to wear a white tank top and senior boys need to wear a plain white tee-shirt. Seniors will then receive an order form about three weeks later with payment information and different photos to choose from. We would like for our Lake Town Virtual Academy students to have their portraits made as well. We will take pictures for LTVA students before in-school students to minimize contact. On September 16th, elementary LTVA students will need to arrive at the school cafeteria at 8:00 am, and high school LTVA students should arrive at 8:30 am. Pictures for senior sports banners will also be taken on the 16th, so senior athletes will need to bring the uniform of their choice.

Regrettably, West Side High School will not be able to have Prom this year. The known risks to students and staff are too great. That, combined with the difficulty of calculating a risk factor for a month in the future, when Prom would have been held, makes it impossible for us to guarantee students, staff, and the community a safe event. While Prom has been an important tradition for juniors and seniors through the years, there are so many safety factors involved in social distancing this year that it is difficult to imagine that students and their dates would enjoy such a night. The cancellation of Prom is very disheartening, but conducting an event of such importance, where some students might feel an obligation to attend, would be worse because it could put student's in a risky atmosphere. -Matt Irwin, principal #WatchUsSoar

Good morning from West Side SD. I’m sure you have probably heard by now that there will be no on site instruction at public schools for the rest of this semester. Instruction will be delivered via AMI for the rest of this school year. A survey related to the AMI process was sent last night and is on the district Facebook and Twitter pages. We are learning on the fly and would like your input on how the process is working. Please complete the survey to give us your feedback if you have not already done so. We would like to remind parents of students in grades 3-6 to please pick up a chromebook for your child. You may pick it up from 8:00 - noon any day this week in the circle drive. If you will call ahead to the elementary office someone will get it ready for you, 501-825-7744. Please do not come into the building. There have been questions regarding how to return the AMI Packets. Parents can do this in different ways. They can send them back on the bus routes as they deliver meals, they can mail them, they can send them digitally if they have that capability, or we have an AMI Drop Off zone at school. The designated "Drop Off" area will be the lobby of the Gathright Gymnasium (old gym) from 8:00 - noon Monday thru Friday. We have boxes with designated grade levels on them. Please do not drop them off at the offices. Buses will head out with students' meals around 10:30 again today and meal pickup is from 11:00 - noon today as well. Reminder, students will be getting meals for two days today and there will be no meals tomorrow. Two days worth of meals will again be available on Thursday as none will be on Friday. Thank you, and have a great day.

Just a reminder, West Side School District is closed until Monday, March 30 (at this point) for classes and all other events and activities. Anything that was scheduled during this time will be rescheduled at a later date, if possible and necessary. If reschedules occur that information will be communicated to you when it is known. The District and school offices will be open from 8:00-noon the rest of the week. For obvious reasons we prefer to communicate via phone or email during this time. Only essential personnel should be on campus during this time off. The campus will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected during this time off as well. An additional reminder, students are expected to complete AMI days 1-4. Regarding student meals during this week… Since we were originally scheduled for four days of student instruction this week we will feed four days worth of meals. Our plan is to send breakfast and lunch on the buses Tuesday-Friday this week. Buses will leave campus with meals around 10:30 each day. If your child is not a bus rider then meals will be available to be picked up in the circle drive from 11:00-1:00 Tuesday-Friday this week. Meals are available to any child from age 6 weeks up to 18 years old, whether they attend West Side School District or not. If you have a child in the age range of 6 weeks to 18 years old who does not currently attend West Side SD and you would like to receive meals for them, please contact the district office to help give us a more accurate number of meals to prepare. Additionally, if your child is a student at West Side SD and you prefer NOT to get meals from the district this week, please contact us and let us know that information as well. If we do not hear from you then the district will operate under the assumption of feeding current students according to how they are transported to school. This is a new process for us, so it will be a work in progress. It is possible that some errors may be made, so please be patient as we work through this. Constructive feedback from you will let us know if we need to make any changes to the process. Remember to wash your hands, practice social distancing and avoid travel/large crowds unless necessary.

Attention Students & Parents/Guardians: Guidance was just issued from Gov. Hutchinson to close all public school districts starting Tuesday. Monday was left as optional for school districts. West Side SD will be closed to all students for all classes and activities starting Monday, March 16. All days missed will be considered AMI days. If a student left something on campus that he/she will need in order to complete AMI assignments please contact the appropriate office to make arrangements to pick it up. AMI packets will be updated to include a total of 10 days that were approved by ADE. That information will be shared with you digitally when possible. Anything not able to be shared digitally will be mailed to you. At this time we are planning to start school back as normal after spring break on March 30. If something changes that plan it will be communicated to you. We will continue to be in communication to reschedule any activities that will be missed due to school closure. Thank you for your support and understanding, and please remember to use common sense during this time. Practice proper hygiene/cleanliness, social distancing and limit travel/large gatherings unless absolutely necessary. Please contact the district on Monday if you have any questions/concerns. Thank you for your support of West Side SD.

History. Why did you become a teacher? I had a friend that needed special education in high school; being around him inspired me. I knew then that I wanted to help kids like him! What is your favorite characteristic in your students? My favorite characteristic in my students is that they enjoy the simple aspects of life that most people tend to take for granted. What are your hobbies outside of school? I love doing anything that has to do with being around and with my family. Who is your biggest role model, why? I have two, Mrs. Hutson. She is always hard working, and you can tell that she cares for her students. Also, Mrs. Terri Cornett, she is always so loving and kind, and her personality just encourages me! Question of student choice: If you weren't teaching right now, what would you be doing? I would definitely be a counselor. I have been through a lot, and I would want to help students who are going through a lot. #TearcherThursday #EagleSpirit #SocialMediaandCommunicationsClass #MsStephaniesClass

Hey folks, I need your help in getting the following information out regarding our early childhood program (ECP). The WSSD Board in support of our awesome ECP has voted to waive the tuition fee for the non-ABC funded positions for the 19-20 School Year and to increase the number of non-ABC funded student positions. In order to be eligible to apply for either the ABC and non-ABC funded positions, families must live in the school district and the student must be 3 or 4 years old on or before August 1, 2019. Applications may be picked up in the elementary office. Staff will be available to accept completed applications on July 29 from 5:30-6:30 for your convenience. All required documentation must be completed including the proof of income. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please call the elementary office at 501.825.7744 with any questions you might have. Thanks! Mr. Long
