Alex Southerland has been named Valedictorian, and Sarah Smith has been named Salutatorian of the West Side High School Class of 2020.

Miss Southerland, daughter of Rachel and Cody Southerland of Drasco, plans to attend Lyon College in Batesville and major in biology with a minor in ecology to become a biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. She earned a 3.96 grade-point average.

Miss Smith, daughter of Ken and Debbie Smith of Higden, plans to attend Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge and major in elementary education to become an elementary school teacher. She earned a 3.91 gpa.

Honor Graduates must earn a minimum 3.5 GPA and take either Advanced Placement or college coursework; the top two are recognized as Valedictorian and Salutatorian.

Remaining Honor Graduates in the class:

  • Hannah Long, daughter of John and Rhonda Long of Higden, plans to attend Central Baptist College in Conway and major in mid-level education and counseling to become a middle school counselor. She earned a 3.84 gpa.

  • Mekaelyn Ramsey, daughter of Phillip and Lori Ramsey of Greers Ferry, plans to attend UA Community College at Batesville and major in STEM, which is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, to become a lab technician/STEM. She earned a 3.79 gpa.

  • Braden Magness, son of Les and Tisha Magness of Edgemont and Marla Magness of Greers Ferry, plans to begin college at ASU-Beebeā€™s Heber Springs campus and major in biology to become a wildlife biologist. He earned a 3.69 gpa.

  • Madison Bailey, daughter of Victor and Traci Bailey of Greers Ferry, plans to attend Ecclesia College in Springdale and major in health sciences to become a pediatric occupational therapist. She earned a 3.68 gpa.

  • Alissa Allen, daughter of Candace Smith of Higden and Jodie Allen of Beebe, plans to attend UA Community College at Morrilton and major in nursing and esthetics to become an esthetician, a specialist in beautification of the skin. She earned a 3.52 gpa.

To celebrate the accomplishment of the entire Class of 2020 in a very public way, family and friends are invited to commencement, which is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Brady-Hipp Arena.
