The weather couldn't have been any better as hundreds of junior and senior high cross country runners poured into Heber Springs for the Josh Park Invitational XC Run on Tuesday, September 11. West Side, led by the incredible Gentry sister-brother duo of Haley and Travis, made its presence known.
In the 3,200 meter race, the West Side junior boys team earned a first place plaque in the 1A-4A school division. Travis Gentry, with a time of 12:27.73, led the team with a 4th place finish in the 1A-4A division of 161 competitors, and also maintained that position in the overall runners of 269 that included 5A and 6A schools. Also placing in the top 20 finishers of schools in 1A-4A were Preston Story (16) and Asa Carr (18).
In the 5k senior girls division, Haley Gentry continued to be a dominating force, finishing 4th in the 1A-4A division comprised of 130 runners and was also 4th place out of the 204 total runners in the senior girls category. Gentry finished the race with a time of 21:06.67. Also earning a medal for the Lady Eagles was Alex Southerland, who placed 14th in the 1A-4A division, crossing the finish line with a time of 23:29.56. The team finished in 9th place of its division.
Cross Country is a hard, rugged sport that requires stamina and perseverance. West Side is very proud of its athletes for their effort and determination, which are reaping results in faster running times and improved physical strength, which will be beneficial to them in other sports.
