West Side welders competing in national SkillsUSA competition finished in the Top 10 this week in Louisville, Ky.

Blaine Hipp, competing individually in welding, finished in 4thplace, and the Metal Fabrications team finished 6th. Team members are Joe Freeland, Austin Murphree, and Mason Treece.

“I am very pleased . . . very proud of them all,” said welding instructor Randy Carr, who along with the welders and their family members attended the awards ceremony tonight. Carr is a veteran who has welders preparing for weeks ahead of state and national competition. This year was no exception as students worked many, many hours, sometimes late into the night, preparing for competition.

In April in Hot Springs, Hipp and the Metal Fab team both won gold in state competition. Kaleb Dewberry finished with a silver medal in welding, and for a second straight year, West Side claimed gold in Pipe Welding, thanks to Payton Dean’s performance.
